Auto jäi Jennyn ja Colinin pihaan, kun auringon laskiessa kävelimme kotiin synttärilounaalta. Kylän pääkadun varrella pitkään tyhjillään olleen, osuuspankki-
arkkitehtuuria edustavan matalan liikerakennuksen ikkunoihin oli yllättäen ilmestynyt tietoja pian avattavista liikkeistä: kulmahuoneiston ikkunaan oli vieläpä teipattu tervetullut teksti 'coming soon: chemist'. Apteekin saaminen kylään on onnenpotku 1000 asukkaan paikkakunnalla, sitä on kaivattu mutta sen järjestymiseen ei oikein ole uskottu. Sekatavarakaupassa, jossa aina ollaan perillä asioista, tiedettiin tulokkaasta jo sen verran, että apteekkarilla on kuulemma pohjoisenglantilainen aksentti.
Apteekin viereen on kylteistä päätellen tulossa kahvila. Taas uusi yrittäjä tällä ilmeisen vaikealla elinkeinon alalla. Muutama kuppila kylässä jo onkin, mutta juuri omanoloista kahvittelupaikkaa tällä haavaa odotellaan. Sellainen olisi viihtyvyyden kannalta aika olennainen. Vähän aikaa meillä olikin kantapaikka, jossa sunnuntapäivän mittaan sanomalehdistä selvittyämme nautimme isoja ja epäterveellisiä aamiaisia. Bisneksen pyörittäminen taisi käydä omistajapariskunnalle liian raskaaksi, säännöllisestä kannatuksestamme huolimatta. Kahvilan pitäjät menivät menojaan ja paikka suljettiin. Samalla menivät suuri suosikkini, jaffamuffinssit. Näissä sokerikakkutaikinasta leivotuissa leivonnaisissa oli sisällä ihanan isoja, usein uunin jäljiltä lämpimiä appelsiinisuklaahippuja.

Today we celebrated Colin's 60th birthday - congratulations, Colin!
On our way home (the car we had to leave at Jenny's & Colin's) we passed a particularly ugly piece of Australian country town architecture - a complex that used to house the post office, the early childhood health centre, a sign shop and a nail parlour. Most of the shops have been empty for a while and the whole building has been renovated - not that it got any prettier in the process. And now we suddenly saw signs announcing the arrival of a whole array of new businesses. Imagine our enthusiasm when we saw that one of the signs was advertising a chemist, and another declared the arrival of a cafe-deli.
A pharmacy is indeed excellent news in a village with 1000 inhabitants and the nearest chemist 25 km away. The lady at the general store informed me that a resident pharmacist was indeed coming to town - a bloke with a Northern English accent, she said. The news about a cafe was equally interesting for us. Yet another cafe in town, one might say, as there are already a few places serving coffee. But we have been a bit homeless recently, since the closing of the Three Creeks Cafe where we used to have big and unhealthy Sunday breakfasts - around midday, when the weekend papers had been browsed through.
With the cafe went my favourite muffins: these 'jaffa muffins' consisted of a plain cake base, generously sprinkled with big chips of orange flavoured chocolate. The new place will have to be pretty special to surpass these, but a little home away from home in Robertson would be very welcome all the same.

Robertson will soon be the cosmopolitan centre of the Southern Highlands with yet another immigrant with a northern English accent. Will it be a white rose or red rose accent or something different?Good news about the pharmacy and probably about the cafe too - from a health point of view!

I wish I knew what a white rose (or red rose) accent means. Have to ask Andy!Regarding the unhealthy, cooked breakfasts, my choice was usually 'the mountain woman breakfast' with only a little bit of bacon and sausages. And of course there was 'the mountain man breakfast' as well, and we all know who usually ate that one. (Quite often we had their nice muesli with yoghurt and warm berries, believe me or not.)
