Se kieli, se kieli
The tiger with the wild tongue

Nyt alkoi vuosi hyvin! Tom Jones on aateloitu!

Paljastan salaisen aseeni, jonka avulla on psyykattu ja piiskattu ruumis ja sielu monenlaisiin yli-inhimillisiin ponnistuksiin (siivoukseen, musiikinteorian tehtäviin, jutunkirjoitukseen - gradun tekoon en kokeillut).

Näin se toimii:
pannaan stereoihin Tom Jones ja Thunderball, ja nupit kaakkoon.

He always runs while others walk

He acts while other men just talk.
He looks at this world, and wants it all,

So he strikes, like thunderball.
He knows the meaning of success.

His needs are more, so he gives less.

They call him the winner who takes all.

And he strikes, like thunderball.

Johan alkaa luuta heilua ja tekstiä syntyä. Tom Jones on myös ainut mies, joka voi laulaa Burt Bacharachin & Hal Davidin Pussycat, Pussycat, I love you oikein ja vaikuttamatta naurettavalta. Ainakaan kovin naurettavalta.

Tekstit kokonaisuudessaan vaikka täältä. Ylpeys ei anna myöten antaa fanisivujen osoitetta, näyttäisi vielä siltä että on tullut siellä vierailtua. Mutta osoite on kyllä helppo arvata.

2006 started well! They have knighted Tom Jones!

This is a good moment for me to share with you my secret weapon. This trick gives me superhuman powers when needed (on cleaning day, when doing my tax, when writing a story). To be used sparingly, the effect might wear out if overused.

This is how it goes: you load in the CD player (or computer if you wish) your Tom Jones CD turn the volume knob to very loud and let the Thunderball roll.

He always runs while others walk
He acts while other men just talk.

He looks at this world, and wants it all,
So he strikes, like thunderball.
He knows the meaning of success.

His needs are more, so he gives less.

They call him the winner who takes all.

And he strikes, like thunderball.

Never failed me yet. And I have to add (I have to) that Sir Tom is the only male singer who could think of singing Pussycat, Pussycat, I love you and getting away with it. And getting Bacharach's melody right!

All the texts from here. I am not going to give the link to Tom's fan pages because that might give the impression that I have actually been there myself. They are easy enough to find anyway.

Voi hyvä ihme. Tomppa on eläin.

Thank you, Anni, for letting us know of Sir Tom (Cat?) Jones's knighthood. It had passed me by.Who would have thought that you were a closet Tom Jones admirer? He always strikes me as an entertainer who know what his audience wants, and delivers it.Denis

Walesin tiikeri, arggh!Hyvää uutta vuotta!

No sinäpä sen sanoit, Kirsti. Denis, I realise Andy's party tapes had no TJ whatsoever! I might have to have a word with him.Hyvää uutta vuotta, Susupetal!

Was that an "arggh" in connection with "Walesin" that I detected from Susupetal? I hope very much for their sake that "arggh" is nothing like an "aaargh" or that any resemblance between Wales and Walesin is purely coincidental.Blwyddwyn Newydd Dda! (Happy New Year)

Dear Welshwoman,At least in Finnish language, Tom Jones is generally referred to as the Welsh Tiger, 'Walesin tiikeri' in Finnish. 'Arggh', on this occasion, is an onomatopoeic interpretation of the noise a tiger makes. What does a tiger say in English? Or in Welsh?Anni

How odd. Why a tiger? Last time I checked, he was stripeless. Do Modern Honours include stripes? (on the ribbon, I mean, I'm not just being silly) Hmmm.I don't know many tigers personally, I have to confess that arggh sounds pretty good to me. "Tiger" is either dywalgi, or, with great originality, teigr. Rhuo is to roar, to growl either arthio or chwyrnu, neither of which sounds nearly as satisfying. Ancestry in a small country that's run by another small country who named you "foreigners" when they arrived would make anyone over-defensive. :0((But on a cheerier note, "what do tigers say in English" does bring to mind Messrs Swann and Flanders - "In that [Greek] song, what is it that goes "siu, siu"?" "That's the little chicks.""Chicks don't go siu siu!""They do in Greece.")

I don't know why a tiger, but it can't be just Finns because there are tiger stripes on my Tom Jones CD cover. Maybe it is simply because, as Kirsti comments above (not entirely convinced about TJ's appeal), "Tomppa is an animal". Tomppa = Tom. I am not sure what chicks say in Finnish, but chooks say "kot kot". Don't get me and Andy started about animal noises, though, because there is no end. (The dogs say "hau hau".)I had to ask Andy about Swann and Flanders. For some reason he brought up Mozart's horn concertos.
