Lapsena maalla joskus näki komeita revontulia, joskus jopa punaisia. Nykyään havainnot ovat jääneet vähemmälle, liekö syy siinä, että asuu keskellä kaupungin valoja vaiko siinä, ettei kuljeskele ulkona sopivaan aikaan. Klo 20-23 kuulemma on parasta aikaa.
Tai sitten syy on osittain siinä, että nyt ollaan kuulemma revontulisyklissä siellä pohjalla, niitä ei yksinkertaisesti ole.
Kävin pari viikkoa sitten Luostolla pienessä Aurora Chalets -hotellissa, jossa oli huoneiden suuret ikkunat (kaikissa huoneissa) rakennettu pohjoista kohti, ja siellä sai respasta sellaisen yksisuuntaisen kännykän, johon tulee revontulihälytys, kun juuri siitä hotellista näkyy revontulia. Varauksia ko. hotelliin kuulemma tulee mm. suorilla puhelinsoitoilla Japanista asti.

Kiitos kauniista revontulista. Viimeksi näin revontulia syyskuun alussa täällä Keski-Suomessa. Tanssivat kauniisti ja ihastuttivat silloisia tsekkiläisiä vieraitamme.

I like your link to the "how to draw a whale" site. It is so refreshingly "innocent", everybody in Robertson should be required to do it - as therapy.

I dreamt of Whales years ago, after visiting Eden, on the Far South Coast of NSW. Eden was an old whaling station, and I am afraid mine was a nightmare. The good news is, the Whales won, but it was sufficiently violent a dream that I took no satisfaction from the Whales' victory.

Oulun korkeudella niitä revontulia kai näkyy jo paljon paljon enemmän kuin etelässä. Tuo revontulikännykkä kuulostaa jonkinlaiselta elektronisen univahdin (vai miksi niitä härveleitä sanotaan) versiolta.

Ansku, kuten sanottu, minulla on aina ollut tässä suhteessa huono tuuri, vaikka asuin koko lapsuuteni katuvalottomalla maaseudulla. En ole vielä luovuttanut!

Feel free to draw your own whale, Denis! But use crayons and watercolours, it is far more creative than Macromedia Fireworks. (Not bad for one's first very first whale though, is it!)

It's a lovely whale, Anni. Some years ago I spent a most instructive half-hour with a three year old, teaching him how to draw a hedgehog. It turned out pretty well, too!

I have no recollections of dreaming of whales, Denis, although I did have one about pretty sparkly turquoise-tinged - but unfortunately psychotically mind-altering - goo once.

At least it matches with Anni's new colour scheme. Do you like it, by the way?

And, Anni, what is that picture in the top left corner? It looks to me like a fossilised snail. But it could also be an aerial view of an ancient Finnish ceremonial temple, for all I know. Can you please enlighten us?

Thank you Angharad, I was beginning to think there was something wrong with the whale.

Denis, it is a fossil, a souvenir from Austria in fact. I have it on my desk here at home. I used to work in a music bureau that had this kind of thing as their logo. I thought it worked really nicely for a music organisation - there is a connotation with hearing, or listening, sort of, and the mathematical proportions are perfect. You recognise a Fibonacci series when you see one in nature, don't you Denis? The series of musical overtones (produced by, say, a vibrating string) follows the same pattern. People were always commenting on the lovely logo, especially instrument builders for some reason. Since I left the place they have abandoned the old logo for something new and abstract and uninteresting, so I thought I'll make it my logo then.
I do have a plan of reworking the logo banner to include some corrugated iron and other Australian stuff instead, meanwhile the snail will do.

It is a lovely snail. A genuine fossil was my first guess, but I could not pick the rationale for you using such an image, other than its inherent beauty of design. You have explained the link with hearing. I would have assumed a more direct link with music through conch shells, to modern musical instruments, like a French Horn.
But, anyway, as you know, I do love a good set of Fibonacci numbers. It was that expanding series pattern which first made me study the image.
You can see how it might have almost been an aerial photo of an ancient temple, or some other ancient human construction though. Which would be art imitating nature, still using the same design principles.
Thanks for the explanation. It is a lovely piece, obviously.
