How to build a little Finland

Marimekkosukkia (Andy on addikti, itselleni en juuri osta)
DVD-levyjä (viimeksi mm. Raid-sarja ja Jäniksen vuosi)
Fiskarsia (usein lahjaksi)

Harkitsen vahvasti myös tätä Petjan pari päivää sitten suosittelemaa ruotsalaista tuotetta.

Above is my contribution to a meme in which expatriate Finns reveal, which Finnish products they miss and bring with them from Finland (or ask visitors to bring).

My list does not have dried mushrooms, coarse rye flour or smoked reindeer or fresh berries, for obvious reasons (quarantine related). It does not have salty liquorice, since, incredibly, you can buy it in Robertson and Berrima (although I do ask my sisters to send or bring me some of the particular Finnish salty liquorice brands that I like). It does not include sourdough rye bread, or Finncrisp rye crackers, since they are available as well.

Instead, I bring smoking bags (to smoke fish or meat in the electric oven), sauna products, Xylitol chewing gum, lactase enzym capsules (a health product), handmade woollen socks, some glassware and kitchenware, books, Marimekko socks (the stripy ones that Andy likes to wear, see picture), Finnish DVDs.

And particular brands of tampons and pantyliners - sounds crazy but this is where I have found the selection in Australian shops and pharmacies unspeakably limited.

I am also wondering, if this Swedish product might be a solution to my woodchopping problems. (Suggested in the comment section of this earlier entry.)

Said Swedish product looks very handy... and I'm a great admirer of stripy socks! (Are the stripes special in some way, and thus superior to Australian striped socks?)

Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that the greatest Australian expatriat-related-export is the ubiquitous Tim-Tam; a friend of mine studying conducting in Vienna has her roommates hooked on them to the extent that a average breakfast for one of the students is a big cup of coffee and three tim-tam slams!

Of course they are special striped socks, being Finnish striped socks. At least they are more expensive. I also seem to notice they last a bit longer, but only a bit.

And thanks for the Tim-Tam observation. Here is a link for those who have no idea what a Tim-Tam is.

Angharad, I have just noticed, to my great horror, that the website does not mention Tia Maria Tim-Tams. Do you think this is bad news, or is it just that at Arnott's they know more about making biscuits than updating websites?

Tim Tam Balls! Bloody hell! Are they even shaved?

Savustuspussit on ihania, pitääkin muistaa lisätä omaan listaani ! Tästä meemistä saa itselleen täydellisen tuliaistoivelistan...

I loooooooooove smoking bags, terrific for cooking ham.

=)

Kari, watch it, you are approaching blasphemy.

Ajattelin ihan samaa, Maurelita!

Good evening

Some years ago I bought here in Switzerland, where I live, some SAVU smokers bags for cooking. I contacted the company SAVU in Finland but they wrote back saying that they cannot sell the bags directly to privates. They produce three different kind of bags: for cooking fish, for poultry and for porc/beef. The food cooked in these bags get a nice smoky taste. Earlier they used to produce these bags in three different ranges: light smoky taste, medium and strong. I've been informed that now they only produce the medium taste which is just fine. So here comes the question: do you have the possibility to send me 12 of each of these bags? (12 fish, 12 poultry and 12 porc). Of course I first would send you the money for the bags + shipping costs via Western Union which I think is the easiest and more practical way of sending money around the world. I wrote to SAVU an email asking them to give me the name of some shops in Finland who sell these bags but they haven't given me any reply so I guess they are not interested in giving me this information. I do hope one of you will help me out in some way to get these bags. Do you have any good idea? Can any of you give me the name and full address of the shops from where I could surely order the bags? Or is anyone of you interested to buy the bags for me and send them down here after the money has arrived? Please give me an answer. Do you eventually know if there is another company in Finland producing such bags? If yes, pls provide full name and address. Thank you very much and kind regards

Dear Danila,
I have bought the SAVU bags from Stockmann's department store in Helsinki when I have visited Finland. The department store does have an export service, so I think it should be possible for you to contact them and make an order using a credit card. You'll find more information about the service here.

I am located in Australia myself, and have sometimes ordered books from the Stockmann's Academic bookstore by faxing in my order and giving a credit card number, so I don't see why this method would not work for you as well.

And I agree that these smoking bags are a great invention, but unfortunately they don't work in the same way in my current fan driven oven. And yes, last time I bought I was only able to get the medium smoke version, so maybe that is the one you should enquire about.

Best,
Anni
