Väliaikatietoja aiemmin mainitusta Lovejoy-urakasta. Menossa on sarjan kolmas sesonki, ja yllättäen ruutuun tupsahtelee kaikenlaisia tuttuja nimiä. Viimeksi katsotussa jaksossa olivat pienissä sivurooleissa Amanda Burton, Minnie Driver ja Michael Kitchen.
Sivumennen ihmetellen - mikä laihassa ja jäykässä Kitchenissä viehättää niin? Foyle's War oli meidän taloudessamme ihannesarja: minä sain rauhassa huokailla Michaelin perään, kun taas mies hurmioitui univormuun sonnustautuneesta Honeysuckle Weeksistä. (Molemmat tässä kuvassa, Kitchen keskellä. On siinä ihmisillä nimet, muuten. Kolmas päänäyttelijä Anthony Howell on vallan mukiinmenevä hänkin.)
Palaan Lovejoyhin. Viime viikolla tulivat vastaan jaksot, joissa nimihenkilöllä on kiihkeä ja romanttinen suhde Victorian eli jähmeästi näyttelevän Joanna Lumleyn kanssa. Tiedän toki, että useimmille nykyihmisille Joanna Lumley on yhtä kuin Todella upeeta -sarjan Patsy. Koska olen kai kohta antiikkia, minulle hän on ikuisesti Safiiri ja Teräs -sarjan Safiiri. Voi miten pelkäsin sitä sarjaa katsoessa! Viisas hanhi pieni, näytä mulle tieni, yläkertaan, alakertaan... Kuka muistaa?
Lovejoyn ensimmäinen sarja on muuten laadun puolesta jotensakin roskaa - pikaisesti ja halvasti kokoon keitetty. Ilmeisesti pilottisarja osoittautui niin suosituksi, että rahaa alkoi löytyä.
Musiikkikin sovitettiin uudelleen, ja siinä samalla meni pesuveden mukana yksi ensimmäisen sarjan harvoista, mielenkiintoisista piirteistä - 1980-luvun brittimusa, joka soi taustalla monissa kohtauksissa - autoradioissa, pubeissa jne. Toinen mielenkiintoinen piirre on ensimmäisen sarjan puvustus - Lovejoy alias Ian McShane kantaa siinä uskomatonta kokoelmaa niin kammottavia jakkuja ja huiveja ja solmioita, että ne ovat melkein tyylikkäitä. Melkein.
Allaolevan kuvan hevonen ei liity Joanna Lumleyhin mitenkään, vaikka jonkun mielestä yhdennäköisyyttä löytyisikin. Kuvat ovat eiliseltä kävelyretkeltä (ks. englanninkielinen osuus).

Who remembers the 1970s sci-fi series Sapphire and Steel? I was watching (as you do) the third series of Lovejoy over Easter holidays and was completely unprepared for Joanna Lumley suddenly appearing in several episodes. Either I haven't seen these or I have mercyfully forgotten. As it turned out she (well, actually it was her character Victoria) had a passionate, romantic relationship with Ian McShanes' Lovejoy. The third series has had other surprises as well - yesterday's episode had Amanda Burton, Minnie Driver and Michael Kitchen, all three in very small supporting roles.
Who cares about AB and MD - but Michael Kitchen... what is it that makes this thin and edgy man so attractive? Foyle's War was a series perfectly designed for our household - I was daydreaming about 
Michael Kitchen while Andy only had eyes for Honeysuckle Weeks in her uniform. Great names, BTW. (See the main characters - Kitchen in the middle. The third one, Anthony Howell, is awfully nice as well.)
When it comes to Joanna Lumley, I know that for most people she will forever be Patsy - for me she is the blue-eyed Sapphire. Sapphire and Steel left me absolutely terrified. Nothing has seemed as scary since.
Denis, 'your' horse says hello (I bet someone thought the picture was a comment about J. Lumley's face, always so calm 
and collected). I walked pass your house and saw that there were some huge blooms in a hybrid tea rose, so I went and took a picture. Pity I could not bottle the fragrance - and pity the picture is badly out of focus. (I think the label said 'Just Joey'). One of the Camellia sasanquas was in full flower, too - beautiful, single white blooms.
I am still not quite half-way my Lovejoy marathon (and I started from the second series).

How sweet of you to take a few photos of my flowers. The more so, for being so unexpected. (I knew you were going to take all those lovely Peony photos last year.) Thanks.
Indeed it is "Just Joey" the lovely peach/apricot coloured Rose. When it flowers well it is delghtful. Large flowers. Sadly it lacks the real "rose" perfume of the old-fashioned Roses, (It has the "tea rose scent") but then again, that is the trade off for the large sized flowers, the repeat flowering, and the "autumn" tonings brought in from its China Rose ancestry. It is well worth a place in any garden, the more so as it is surviving (and blooming) completely unattended!
The Sasanqua Camellia is very welcome too. I have collected a few of those pure white, single flowered Sasanqua Camellias. All similar, but with subtle variations between them in flower shape, size and time of flowering. I really like them. They are "tough as", to use the modern jargon. Also, next time you go walking past, stop and sniff the flower. It should have a light sweet fragrance.
You know me well enough to know I like plants with some fragrance - the more so if it is unexpected.
Just as seeing my own plants on your blog was an unexpected pleasure (a gift). Thanks again.

Hi Anni - Sorry, but I got carried away, by your beautiful photos.
I was stunned and delighted to see Joanna Lumley gracing your blog, and looking so young. Unfortunately, I do not remember Sapphire and Steel. But I do love Foyle's War. The link you posted took me to a site which says that there is a 4th series in production! I have warmed to Michael Kitchen, and I like his understated dry Britishness. However, I still have a problem with him, for having played the role of Prince Charles at one stage - all too convincingly, I am afraid. More "dry Britishness" than I can cope with. But Honeysuckle Weeks (is that really her name?) there is no "dry Britishness" at all! A lovely "foil" to Inspector Foyle.

It may have been that, although I remembered it as a docu-drama on Charles and Di. It was some time ago. Coldness personified, anyway, But, of course, I should not fault the actor for the unpleasant features of his character, should I? I do like him in Foyle's War.

Hurrah for Foyle's War!!! I'm fond of Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle, although members of my extended family are also known to go a bit weak at the knees for Julian Ovenden (Foyle the younger).
Did you see Ms Weeks in Poirot? Not quite as sweet there! The incredible resemblance between her and her younger sister, Perdita, gave me a bit of a shock when the latter turned up in Sherlock Holmes...
(On the Perdita Weeks front, she was apparently the 'Second Player' in Kenneth Branagh's version of Hamlet. I haven't seen it for a long time but does this mean that she was the little girl with the curly hair?)

Angharad, I did see Honeysuckle in Poirot, but I didn't know she had a sister. The only Perdita I remember is the one in 101 Dalmatians. But I have seen Branagh's Hamlet... can't say I remember a little girl.

She was in the company of strolling players who attempt to 'catch the conscience of the king' for His Highness the Indecisive. Perdita is only a year younger than me, which is perhaps why - if the girl in question is she - I noticed her in the first place. And the fact that she got to hug Kenneth Branagh was a bit of a bonus.
Unless I'm hallucinating again...

Minusta tuntuu, että äiti rajoitti sarjan katselua kun tajusi, miten minua pelotti. En nimittäin muista muuta kuin pieniä juonenpätkiä yhdestä tuotantojaksosta. (Avaruusasema Alfa oli myös kiellettyjen listalla, siksi kai kun se tuli aika myöhään.)
Eikös koko 1970-luku ollut kämppiä ennen kämppiä? (Vai c-kirjaimellako tämä pitää kirjoittaa?) Ainakin 1970-luvun vaatemuoti ja -värit tuntuvat ainaisten kertaustyylien joukossa jotenkin alkuperäisiltä. Eri asia sitten, millaisia traumoja 1970-luvun uusi tuleminen tuottaa meille, jotka oikeasti käytimme liehuvalahkeisia, ruskeita vakosamettihousuja.
Kämpistä - kyllähän se aika muoviselta näyttää ja tuntuu.

Olis aika vänkää katsoa ekat S&T jaksot, oisko ne sit yhtään niin jännittäviä kuin silloin lapsena, ja mikä siinä oli niin älyttömän jännittävää pikkulikalle. Ainoita asioita mitä muistan oli se "upstairs and downstairs" jänkätys, jahdattava valoläikkä ja jollain lailla koominen "Lyijy"...

Olin unohtanut Lyijyn. Mutta sen muistan, miten äidillä siinä kielletyssä huoneessa oli ihan kauheat silmät.

Hei Anni,
ah Lovejoy, on minun suosikkini pitkältä ajalta. Se tuli jossain vaiheessa lauantai-iltapäivisin ja vieläkin sarjan ajatteleminen vie minut rauhalliseen tunnelmaan. Ian McShane on todella (I mean absolutely) loistava Al Swearengen yhtä mielettömän loistavssa HBO:n sarjassa Deadwood, josta nyt on nähty ensimmäinen tuotantokausi. Joko tämä on ehtinyt aussilaan saakka. Terveisiä keväisestä (hah) Joensuusta.

For me too Joanna is first Saphire and after that something else... That 'upstairs and downstairs' -thingie is frightening as well as was that other story in the train station. Oh, those days. :-)

Muumi, olen ihan vasta hoksannut että tällainen sarja on olemassa. Kunnon kanavilta ei ole täällä tullut - ehkä se hautautui jonnekin kaupallisille kanaville, joita ei viitsi katsoa, kun mainoksia tulee enemmän kuin itse ohjelmaa. Mutta DVD:llä löytyy!
Andy, Honeysuckle is a bit of a weed here (isn't it?).
Timo, I don't remember a train station - this confirms my belief that maybe Mum didn't let me watch all of the episodes because the series was too scary. I do remember another (much later and less scary?) episode involving a country house and a painting.

That train station adventure seems to be the second one (see: http://www.steve-p.org/ss/ ) and there's all in all six stories. I think that they showed only first two in Finnish television, because I would definitely had watched the other ones if they'd shown those... (didn't even know of the last ones until 4 minutes ago :-)

Safiiri ja Teräs oli pop lapsena ! Kehtaan nyt tunnustaa (kun en ole ainoa) etten mäkään hoksannut että Patsy oli sama kuin Safiiri ; ja The Advengers -sarjaakin katsoin niin paljon myöhemmin ettei sytyttänyt.
