Sauvakävely on in, inhimillinen tragedia out
Nordic walking is in, human tragedy forever out

Viikon kuunteluvinkki johtaa Andyn musiikkiohjelman sivulle. The Music Show päästi eetteriin minuutin verran Lordia - Andyä vähän harmitti, kun hän ei päässyt ajanpuutteen vuoksi esittelemään tietojaan suomalaisen pakanallisen sarvipääjoulupukin ja monsteriyhtyeen yhteyksistä - mutta ennen kaikkea vinkki koskee toisella tunnilla ollutta kapellimestari John Storgårdsin haastattelua.

Storgårds johtaa näinä viikkoina montaa australialaista orkesteria, ohjelmassa hän puhuu mm. rakkaudestaan Schumanniin sekä Lapin kamariorkesterin johtamisesta (Rovaniemeltä sekin). Lordia aivan ensimmäisen tunnin lopussa, 53 minuutin kohdalla, Storgårdsia toisella tunnilla kohdassa 9'05'', yhteensä parikymmentä minuuttia musiikkia ja puhetta. Kuunneltavissa nettisivulta jokusen viikon ajan.

Ja vielä yksi Lontoon Citystä tupsahtanut kaupallinen pelilinkki - skottilanko lienee pankkiammatissaan viettänyt paljonkin aikaa peruutellessaan virtuaaliautoja virtuaaliruutuihin. Minä törmäsin kolmesti ja kyllästyin. Kiitos kuitenkin Donald.

The weekend newsupdate begins with an image of young Marilyn Monroe in the cover of The Sydney Morning Herald's Good Weekend magazine. Oddly enough, the magazine hasn't realised the real revelation of the photo: Nordic walking was already in 60 years ago!

Pretty much permanently out and certainly not high on the political agenda has been the human tragedy of the Aboriginal communities in the Australian outback. A week or two ago, a frustrated and experienced female lawyer decided that it was time for people to start caring. The politicians of course took this as a signal to rush to protect their own political futures - in a way it is understandable, as the answers to the underlying huge problems are neither easy or obvious. I have included a few links, mostly for my Finnish readers since I doubt the topic gets much coverage in the European media.

If you are curious (and why wouldn't you be) about the Finnish winner of the Eurovision Song Contest, The Music Show played a minute worth of the winning hit by the Lapland band Lordi yesterday. With only a few seconds to introduce the band, Andy could not share with his listeners his inside information about the true nature of the Finnish Father Christmas, another resident of Lapland. Namely, 'joulupukki' translates as 'Christmas goat', and indeed it is not long ago that he looked awfully pagan and boasted a pair of horns - and we have all seen heavy rock fans do their two-fingered greeting.

More interesting in the program, however, is an interview by the Finnish violinist and conductor John Storgårds who is on a conducting tour in Australia. He talks about his love for Schumann and about his long-term cooperation with the Lapland Chamber Orchestra (like Lordi, based in Rovaniemi, Lapland). The Lordi snippet can be found in the end of the first hour of the show (at about 53 minutes), Storgårds's interview 9'05'' into the second hour of the show. Available for listening on the internet for about four weeks.

And one more link, this one a commercial games link that found its way into my inbox courtesy of my Scottish brother-in-law. I don't dare to think how much time people have spent on this one in the City of London. I tried it three times, with pathetic results, then gave up. Thanks anyway, Donald!

And here 's the whole song as seen on the contest. That was really something new in Eurovision compared to those bikini-pop-songs or saint-ballads seen on previous 40 years. The win was well-earned! :-)

Timo, I wholeheartedly agree about being tired of the bikini-pop! And, having now listened to Lordi a few times, the song is certainly more interesting than the 2005 and 2004 winners (wasn't 2004 the Year of the Danish Duo?). See, I am not ashamed to admit I watch the show pretty much every year...
And thanks for the link!

Anni.
You really covered a range of issues there. The links to the Aboriginal issue are good, but still look at the symptoms, not the deep underlying cause - total destruction of a culture, by removal of people from traditional lands. Petrol sniffing becomes a diversion when life has "no other purpose or meaning". No amount of "Governments throwing money at the problem" will give people a meaning to their lives, when a lifetime's experience tells them their lives have no meaning, or worth to society. There are no easy answers.
Still, thanks for bringing this issue to the surface.

Yes, Denis, well aware of the iceberg even if it is just the tip that is making the news, as usual.

Anni, you'll be pleased to know that this is one of many that are going around the City.
To all of you that may try this, the standard is for a total time for the 4 levels, is 93secs. Anni, you'll have to keep practising.

Goodness me. I just saw a picture of Lordi, and for me the concept of them being 'clothed' is not quite as close to the surface as them being 'armed'. !!!

On the matter of more important things, Manduway Yunipingu gave a really interesting interview at the con last year; he said that what goes on in the Northern Territory really signifies a covert programme of genocide through neglect.
I don't know anything about economics or remote area issues or cultural sustainability but I am a firm believer in education, and how things are ever going to get better when remote schools are desperately underfunded and understaffed is beyond me. (Schools that have, by a miracle, got a swimming pool or a music programme have cut truancy rates by up to 90%, but why would anyone want to fund something useful like that? Or translations of senior textbooks into indigenous languages)

Quite right, Angharad.
