Voisko ihanammin...
A Roman feast
Elämä alkaa voittaa - päivät ovat selvästi pitempiä ja sitä paitsi tein viime viikolla keittiössä ihmeellisen keksinnön. Lasilliseen appelsiineista puristettua mehua lusikoidaan kypsän kärsimyshedelmän hedelmäliha. Ahhh. Näyttää sammakonkudulta mutta maistuu taivaalliselta.
Voi olla että resepti toimii paremmin tässä maassa. Passionhedelmät ovat talvikaudella aivan erityisen hyviä (banaaneja taas ei saa tällä hetkellä ollenkaan alle 15 dollarin kilo, sillä hurrikaani Larry teki selvää jälkeä viljelmistä). Appelsiineja puolestaan ostetaan verkkokasseittain kotiin ympäri vuoden nimenomaan mehun puristamista varten. Kypsistä appelsiineista puristettu mehu on yksi niitä asioita joita jään kaipaamaan jos joskus muutan takaisin Eurooppaan.
Tänään tuli 38 vuotta täyteen. Loppuvuoden Rooman-lomaa odotellessa olivat lahjusten antajat selvästi lyöneet viisaita päitä yhteen, sillä DVD:n muotoisista paketeista paljastui selkeä teema. Keksittekö vielä lisää Rooma-aiheisiä filmejä? Entä Rooma-kirjallisuus? Tämmöisiä tuli (ihan liikaa mutta ilmeisesti oli ollut joku alennusmyynti):

If I ever move back to Europe, I'll miss my freshly sqeezed glass of orange juice. Last week I managed to improve the already fantastic morning treat by scooping in the flesh of a big, ripe passionfruit. It looks like frog spawn, I know, but it is a life-saver on a windy, cold winter's morning. Passionfruit is very good in wintertime, and there are no bananas under $15/kilo after the tropical cyclone Larry. They are seriously saying that, in addition to the petrol prices, the price of bananas is to blame for the latest inflation figures and the expected rise in interest rates. I don't understand the mechanism - I mean, you can't do without petrol but nobody buys bananas when they are over $15 a kilo!
It is my birthday (and Celeste's!) today. I got a disproportionate number of presents, most of them DVD shaped. We are planning a little holiday in Rome on our way to Europe later this year, and very appropriately all the DVDs had to do with this particular theme. Kubrick's Spartacus, Rossellini's Rome, Open City, Wyler's Roman Holiday, Fellini's Roma, Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley. I hope there was a sale on... Can you think of more films about Rome? What about books?
I have never been to Rome even if I have been to Italy a lot of times.

Meillä metsämarjat meni tänä vuonna kuivuuden kouriin. Onneksi viime kesä oli marjojen suhteen ylitsevuotavainen ja ahneuksin iski, joten eiköhän tässä talvi keikutella ja toivotaan ensi kesästä parempaa marja-antia.
Roomassa huseerataan ainakin kirjassa Enkeleitä ja Demoneja.

Häpeäkseni olen minäkin lukenut ko. enkelidemoniopuksen. Oli se minusta sentään vähän parempi kuin Da Vinci Code.
Kiitos pelilinkistä, pitää tutustua! CSI ei ole ihan suosikkisarjoja (en lakkaa ihmettelemästä, miten monta uutta kärpäsentoukka-ajoitus-, mahalaukunsisältö- ja maksanpunnitsemissarjaa vielä tarvitaan) mutta eiköhän BBC ole pannut vähän paremmaksi.

Burgeoning inflation. Interest rate rises. When was the last time you or anyone you know had a pay rise to keep up with any of these things? Then business representatives talk about how economically unhealthy it is to give minimum wage earners (people working all hours to scrape a living barely above the breadline) an "excessive" increase.
Honestly.
On a more cheerful note, whereabouts in Italy are you going? Orvieto and Urbino are very nice.

My favourite Roman film is "Bicycle Thieves" ("Ladri di biciclette", directed by Vittorio de Sica). It's appallingly sad - and probably a bit manipulative if we're being totally honest - but it's very beautifully photographed and acted; and, in a way, Rome is the main character.
Since I see Audrey Hepburn's name has come up, Finnish readers of this blog might like to know that in the 1950s the long flights from Sydney to London - about 30 hours, I believe - were referred to by Qantas flight attendants as the "Hepburn" flights. Women boarded in Sydney looking like Audrey Hepburn and got off in London resembling Katharine Hepburn.

Angharad, I have never been to Rome but have been to quite a few other places in Italy, so I am very much looking forward to this trip.
I had heard about the Hepburn flights. I would not mind looking like Katharine Hepburn, actually.

Hi Anni and Angharad. I assume (despite Angharad's death reference there) that Anni wishes to look as Katharine Hepburn looked, at some stage in the past (i.e., when she was still with us).
As with all film stars, there are lots of "fan sites" and bios, but this one has some good information, and lots of "gallery" shots. Anni can choose which "look" to take on.

Favourite movie roles? Eleanor of Aquitaine, in Lion in Winter. A wonderful role about a strong woman, beautifully played. Though her role in African Queen was great too.

Aaaaaaaah Roomaan... Olen käynyt siellä kaksi kertaa ja molemmat olivat ikimuistoisia reissuja. Ekalla päätin opetella italiaa ja muuttaa sinne (olin jotain 17v); toinen matka hiljattain jolla tapasin siellä silloin asuvan taidemaalarikaverini joka oli tehnyt haaveestani totta. Mutta minäpä asun Pariisissa...
Luin La peau du tambour -nimisen (Arturo Pérez-Reverte) dekkarin pari vuotta sitten, en tiedä millä kielellä sitä löytyy mutta tunnelma oli aika erikoinen, hakkereita Vatikaanissa jne !
